Monday’s Board of Education meeting was short and sweet; running barely over a half hour, it still yielded exciting updates about sports wins and plans to address student learning outcomes.
North Warren’s fall sports season was a resounding success with some notable highlights: The Boy’s soccer team won the colonial division championship, the Girl’s soccer team finished the season with a 12-7 record and won the Colonial Division title 9-1; two students were selected for first team honors for the football team. The marching band won the regional national championship with a score of 92, and received awards for Best Color Guard, best visual, best overall effect, best percussion, and best music.

North Warren cheerleading is expected to participate in a winter competition season, and recently won the final season in the varsity intermediate division, and the first competition of their season. Six of the members of the girl’s cross country team were selected for First Team All-Conference; among them was Ava Diego, Junior Class Representative for the Board of Education.
After hearing from the president about the fall sports season, Dr. Timothy Fredericks presented an explanation of the District Improvement Plan formulated with the results of the New Jersey Quality Single Accountability Continuum (NJQSAC) assessment team. The NJQSAC is a state and federal system of accountability that assesses educational performance in order to measure student progress and identify weaknesses within the district. The NJQSAC report helps provide support and improvement to both district administration and student outcomes.
Districts undergo a NJQSAC review every three years; the evaluation process examines five main areas to assess educational performance: Instruction and Program, Fiscal Management, Governance, Operations, and Personnel. Dr. Fredricks reported that North Warren High fell short in its NJQSAC evaluation primarily due to student achievement in language arts, math, and science.
North Warren plans to improve academic development, communication with parents and students, and to create a system of accountability for financial procedures. The school’s District Improvement plan will help address the specific areas of improvement revealed in the state assessment, and future NJQSAC assessments will ensure accountability.
In other updates covered in the meeting: North Warren sees its first HIB (Harassment, Intimidation, and Bullying) CASE of the 2025-2026 school year which will be investigated by Anti-Bullying Coordinator, Mr. Sam Scocozza, before being brought back to the board for a ruling.
Upcoming events to be aware of at North Warren: On November 21 the North Warren band parents association awards banquette is scheduled from 5:30PM–9:00PM; the Powder Puff game is scheduled for November 24, at 4:30PM; later on November 24, the North Warren PTO bonfire will be held from 6:00PM–8:00PM; and classes will be dismissed early on November 26 before adjourning for Thanksgiving break.
