Pickleball Courts Coming to Sycamore Park

Improvements are coming to Blairstown’s Sycamore Park.

The Township Committee allocated $100,000 for new facilities and upgrades to existing ones at its Sept. 24 meeting.

Highlights of the improvements include new pickleball courts and a paved walking path around the park. Committeeman Mike Suk described the upcoming projects.

“The walking path will start at the concession stand, going around the perimeter and ending up near the basketball court, which will all be connected to the parking lot,” Suk said.

Suk emphasized that the walking path will be attractive to seniors and will be open to dog walkers as well. The dog walkers will, of course, be expected to clean up after their canines.

Also planned is the installation of a 100-by-200-foot asphalt surface that will include two basketball courts, which will have a nine-foot basket for younger players, and two pickleball courts. That work is expected to happen next spring, Suk said.

Suk said participation in pickleball has grown by 31% during the past three years.

“More than 48 million adults and 2 million or more kids and teens are playing pickleball,” Suk said. He added that he has received many questions from residents about the sport being available in Blairstown.

“They have to go to other towns,” he said. “It’s about time we bring pickleball to Blairstown.”

The improvements to the park will be funded by the township’s capital improvement budget. No debt will be accrued by the township, according to the ordinance.
