On Saturday, February 10, Gallery 23 ran a Valentine’s Day open house event featuring various artists’ demonstrations.

The event ran from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. and offered everything from glass arts and wood burning demonstrations to diorama building and silver forging. The public was able to meet with various artists to learn about their process and ask them questions one-on-one.

Lampworker Lori Heninger, a New Jersey Council on the Arts Fellowship winner, who uses a blowtorch to create ocean-themed glass art pieces, admitted her process was a little dangerous.

“It can get pretty hot,” she said.

After creating a glass piece, she then fires it in a kiln.

“It needs to be annealed,” Heninger explained. “Which is heating the finished piece in a kiln and then slowly cooling it. That way it becomes more durable and less likely to break.”

A happy crowd flowed in and out of 23 Main Street and was treated to light refreshments at the gallery. The art co-op has been in existence since 2001 and features American-made arts and crafts.

“We are always open to featuring new artists who create original work,” said board president Robin Rickard.
