Frances Rowe Van Solkema

Frances “Nana” Rowe Van Solkema (82) passed away peacefully on Monday, January 29, 2024, surrounded by her loving family.

Fran was born in Warren County on August 22, 1941 to the late Jerome and Elizabeth Matlock. She made her home in Mt. Bethel, Pennsylvania alongside her late husband, Thys “Ty” Van Solkema. Fran and Ty married on October 12, 1957, and spent a total of 61 loving years together. Fran had a generous giving spirit, and over the years she became “Nana” to everyone. An avid baker, Nana showed up to almost every appointment with a homemade treat in tow. She especially loved baking Christmas cookies to share. However, baked goods were about the only thing that Nana sugarcoated — she believed in telling it like it was, and was aptly described as “spunky,” even in her final days.

Nana enjoyed cooking, canning and gardening. She was also at nearly every one of her grandkids’ events over the years, whether it was dance, band, basketball, wrestling, soccer, softball, baseball, cheering or tennis. Before long, she became “Nana” to the entire team. She loved following her new “grandchildren” as they grew, by attending events, sending cards and saving newspaper clippings. Nana enjoyed watching college/professional sports and reading books, stories about animals and her monthly magazines “Mornings with Jesus” and “In Touch Ministries.” Every Sunday morning, she watched Charles Stanley sermons. Nana was a member of the Knowlton Senior Citizens Club of Columbia, and she enjoyed collecting magnets, wind chimes and lighthouses.

She is survived by her brothers Jerry and Kenneth Rowe; her niece who was raised as a daughter, Lisa Makatura (Andy). She is also survived by her grandchildren (Damon Singer, Dustin Singer, Bryan Makatura (Taylor) and Liane Makatura) and her great grandchildren (Angelina, Ryan and Daiton Singer). She was predeceased by her beloved husband Ty; her siblings John Rowe, Julia Rowe Miller and Herman Rowe; her daughter Connie Van Solkema Singer Moser; and her sons-in-law Thomas Singer and Darryl Moser.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, February 10, 2024 at 10:30 a.m. in the Newbaker Funeral Home, 200 Route 94, Blairstown. Interment will follow the service in the Hope Moravian Cemetery, Hope. Visitation will be held at the funeral home on Friday, February 9, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.. Donations in memory of Nana (Frances) may be made to the Monroe County Hospice House via the LVHN Pocono Foundation.
