Mary Lou Hawkins

Mary Lou Hawkins, 86, a longtime resident of Blairstown, passed away on Monday, November 20 at Heath Village, surrounded by her loving family.

Mary Lou was born in New York City on December 9, 1936 to Arthur and Louise (Herfurth) Marcordes. She grew up in Whitestone, Queens. She graduated from Bayside High School in 1954. While in high school, she was a member of the FAF sorority. Following graduation, Mary Lou attended Berkeley Business School in New York City, where she acquired skills which served her well in the areas of personal finance and real estate. While in her 20s, Mary Lou worked in the medical records department at New York University Medical Center. Later, she worked briefly as a real estate agent in Chatham.

In 1953, Mary Lou met the love of her life, Vincent Hawkins. The two were introduced on a blind date arranged by a mutual friend. At that time, Vince was serving in the U.S. Navy and was stationed in the Brooklyn Navy Yard. They were married on November 3, 1956. They lived in Bayside, Queens before moving to Madison to raise their two children. In 1979, they moved to Bridgewater Township. Later, they enjoyed spending time at their lake house on Lake Wallenpaupack in Pennsylvania. Following retirement, Mary Lou and Vince settled in Blairstown, where they lived for more than 20 years. They were active members of the Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd, where they both sang in the church choir, participated in numerous church activities and made many friends in the community. Mary Lou and Vince enjoyed taking trips with the local senior citizens group, and Mary Lou looked forward to her outings with members of the Red Hat Society.

Mary Lou will be remembered as a devoted mother and grandmother. She loved the holidays (especially Christmas) and family celebrations. She adored her grandsons. Regular Friday visits with Aaron and Noah were the highlight of her week. Spending time with them always brought her tremendous joy.

Beloved wife to the late Vincent Hawkins for 58 years, Mary Lou is survived by her daughter Kim Hawkins-Paine (husband Christopher Paine); her son Scott Hawkins; her grandsons, Aaron and Noah Hawkins; and her sister, Helen Caffrey (husband Ed Caffrey).

A memorial service will take place Friday, December 8 at 1 p.m. at Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd, 168 Route 94, Blairstown. A memorial visitation will be held prior from noon to 1 p.m. at Good Shepherd. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation in Mary Lou’s name to Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd.
