The Pocono Family YMCA, located at 809 Main Street, in Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania, is set for major renovations beginning in February 2024. Having been a fixture for some who can remember learning to swim there from elders who themselves took swim lessons about 70 years ago, the expanded, modernized facility will take over the Dunkin’ Donuts next door to eventually have a new pool, accompaniments and gym.

A total so far to be spent on the renovation and expansion project is reported to be $12.5 million and in 2014 the facility celebrated its centennial.

According to their website, the mission of the YMCA remains all-encompassing and strong: “In our community, the Y is a leading choice in health and well-being. With a mission centered on balance, the Y brings families closer together, encourages good health and fosters connection through fitness, sports, guidance and resources needed to achieve greater health and well-being for their spirit, mind and body.”

About 15 miles, or just a half hour drive over the Route 80 / Delaware Water Gap Bridge from Blairstown, it offers a myriad of fun and affordable and physically beneficial activities for all ages, including childcare and summer camp. Here are a few:

By popular demand, Lisa offers Aqua Zumba to fun, mostly Latin tunes. She said she just loves to exercise to dance music. It’s fun when she encourages all up front to splash her down during heated workouts. Photo by D.L. Dunn, 11/2023.

Simple lap swimming is available in their 80-foot pool, with adaptive equipment and assistance to allow access and greater mobility. Every day, this is available. The pool is scheduled to be expanded to Olympic length. Photo by D.L. Dunn, 11/2023.

Managing Editor

Born & educated in NY with a 1988 Environmental Science degree from SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry, my husband and I reside in Hardwick with our young daughter and several spoiled pets. This is a true gem in Northwest New Jersey, and my commitment to the people and environs has been shown in the many different fields I've worked - municipal & county official, election clerk, open space plan writer, newspaper & radio journalist, grant writer, events coordinator and farm market manager as well as retail, waitressing, archiological digger and once for a short while in a very huge warehouse.

My favorite job was as a reporter for many years with the Recorder newspapers, Blairstown Press, Paulinskill Chronicle, Gannett publications plus WNTI Public Radio producing public affairs and human interest stories on-air.

I often have my cell phone ready to capture some of the interesting people and stories around us. I'm thrilled to now serve as RVE's Managing Editor and hope to help fellow writers hone their skills and show you the issues as well as treasures that exist in North Warren, through their eyes.
