Carolyn E. Van Der Wiele

Carolyn E. Van Der Wiele, 81 years of age, a resident of Columbia, passed away in Succasunna on September 7th, 2023, surrounded by her family.

She was born on August 20th, 1942 in Jersey City to Norman and Wanda (Neubelt) Reeves. She graduated from Belleville High School in 1960.

Carolyn met her husband Thomas in 1961. They then got married and started their family. She was a stay-at-home mom to four daughters while also driving a school bus for 20 years for Blairstown Elementary School. After raising her girls, she continued her education and became an RN, working at Hackettstown Community Hospital as the head OR nurse until her retirement.

In her spare time, Carolyn enjoyed sewing, gardening, canning vegetables and playing the piano. She also loved visiting the Jersey Shore, including LBI and Seaside Park especially. A special event for her was riding their Harley Davidson down to Ocean City, Maryland for “Bike Week” with her husband. When her children were younger, she would take them swimming and camping to Swartswood Lake and Lake Susquehanna. Carolyn had a special place in her heart for animals, especially dogs and cats. She would show her Great Danes and Westies. She was also a huge NASCAR fan rooting for Michael Waltrip.

She is survived by four daughters, Sandi Tillman and husband Tom; Suzanne Gwinnett and partner Steve Spinavaria; Laura Bush and husband Richard; Carolee Stoddart and husband Carl; 12 grandchildren, Rebecca Zelanko and husband John; Jessica Newman and husband John; Kevin Tillman and wife Chelsea; Thomas Gardner and wife Corinne; Morgan, Richard, Courtney, Tyler, Tucker, Hunter, Hailey and Trent with nine great grandchildren. Carolyn was predeceased by her husband Thomas in 2000; a sister Barbara; brother-in-law Walt; and grandson Kiel. She is also survived by a long-time friend Michael Gerhart of Columbia.

Visitation will be held Tuesday, September 12th, 2023, from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Newbaker Funeral Home, 200 Route 94, Blairstown. Friends and family may assemble to the funeral home starting at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, September 13th, with a funeral service starting at 11 a.m., followed by interment, at Yellow Frame Cemetery, Route 94, Fredon.
