INTERESTING FOLKS: Sussex County Community College Names Women’s Volleyball Coach

PRESS RELEASE: SCCC (NEWTON, N.J.) – Shannel Zeeman, a former community college volleyball player, brings her game skills to the new volleyball program at Sussex County Community College (SCCC).

After a successful career playing volleyball at Old Bridge High School, Zeeman was a member of the inaugural volleyball team at Middlesex County Community College in 2012. The following year, she was named the team captain and was awarded the team’s MVP. Now, as the head coach of Sussex County Community College’s women’s team, which starts play in the fall, Zeeman is looking to parlay that experience of participating in a new program in Newton.

“I am extremely excited for the upcoming season and look forward to the challenges that come with building a team from the ground up,” said Zeeman. “I feel strongly that I will be a great fit at SCCC because I have seen from an athlete’s perspective what it takes to build a good foundation for a new team.”

After MCCC, Zeeman coached at the Central Jersey Heat Volleyball Club while also attending Kean University.

“I am delighted to join the SCCC athletics program,” she said. “Now, I have the opportunity to also incorporate what I have learned from a coach’s perspective. I believe my experience as an athlete and now as a coach will add up to a recipe for success.”

“We are excited to have Shannel lead this new program,” said Director of Athletics Todd Poltersdorf. “Her experience and knowledge of volleyball make her the perfect choice for this position.”

Women’s volleyball is just the latest addition to the SCCC athletic program, which has grown tremendously in the past four years. This expansion includes football, lacrosse, wrestling, Esports and volleyball. The men’s wrestling team recently had four wrestlers qualify for the NJCAA National Tournament in Council Bluffs, Iowa, with Skylanders competing with wrestlers from all over the country. The college also offers baseball, softball, men’s and women’s basketball, and men’s and women’s soccer.
