Jeffrey W. Smolha

Jeffrey W. Smolha, 65 years of age, a lifelong resident of Frelinghuysen, passed away on March 16, 2023 in Newton. He was born in Newton on December 13, 1957, to Joseph P. and Barbara A. (DePuy) Smolha.

He proudly served his country and was honorably discharged from the United States Navy after serving from 1977 to 1981 and reenlistment between 1981 to 1987. He served a total of 10 years at domestic Naval Air Stations and at sea aboard the USS Belleau Wood, as a meteorologist. After discharge, he graduated from Penn State University with a degree in golf course and turf management.

Jeff had a career in golf course management and construction equipment sales. He was an avid sportsman and a lifelong member of the South Frelinghuysen Gun Club and a passionate golfer during the summer months. In addition to his hobbies, he cared for the family far, “Eva’s Acres.” Jeff had a fond appreciation for “all things bourbon” and Manchester United Football Club.

He is survived by his wife of 22 years, Martha Hildebrandt, who adored him; his mother, Barbara Smolha; brother, Philip Smolha; sister, Joanne Lawrence; Aunt Jean Smolha and Uncle Bob Smolha. His nieces and nephews include Nicholas and Melissa Lawrence; Eva and Jeremy Walton; Sarah Hildebrand and Derrik Faunt; Steven Hildebrandt; Michael Hildebrandt; Claire Lawrence; and Madison and McKensie Moore. He was the godfather of Katelynn Ingham. Jeff was predeceased by his father, Joseph, and a brother, Douglas Smolha.

A period of visitation will be held from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m., April 7, 2023 at Newbaker Funeral Home, 200 Route 94, Blairstown, with Words of Remembrance at 6 p.m.
